Tree Planting Children from Brandhall Primary School planted 20 treeswith a little help from Groundwork West Midlands and Barcham Trees

Groundwork win benefits Brandhall Primary School

Youngsters at Brandhall Primary School in Edinburgh Road, Oldbury, helped plant 20 trees donated by Barcham Trees.

Thanks to a Groundwork West Midlands business card, Brandhall Primary School is now benefitting from new fruit trees to develop their food growing area.

The trees, which included apple and birch, were won by Irene Shaw, Head of the Design Team at Groundwork West Midlands, after she attended the Housing Conference at Birmingham’s ICC last year.

She said “I put my business card in several interesting company's stands, and was contacted by Barcham's Trees to say that I had won 20 trees.”

“We contacted Brandhall Primary School in Oldbury, who we have done a couple of schemes for in the past creating natural play spaces, to see if there were any spaces where they would like to have some trees. They identified that they were hoping to develop a food growing area, so asked if they could have some fruit trees, the rest would be planted in the school grounds. They will provide shade and provide additional wildlife habitats in the school grounds, contributing to the climate change agenda in a small way.”

Headteacher, Mrs Elaine Fitzgerald said "it had been a really lovely experience."

Groundwork supplied the manpower and tools and machinery to prepare the ground and dig the holes and Barcham Trees, based in Ely in Cambridgeshire, supplied the trees.
