Sheepwash Farm

Rob and Victoria Gray run a very busy farm but were so impressed by the work that Groundwork were doing that they worked hard to gather donations from their various partners so that the project could continue the following summer.

Altogether the Farm raised enough money to enable four schools to participate in the project, with each of the schools also contributing.

In the summer term of 2011 the four schools; Whitgreave Infants, Stow Heath Infants, Castlecroft Primary and Hamstead Juniors, all enjoyed a great day at the Farm. The pupils participated in various activities such as; a farm tour, tractor and trailer ride, strawberry picking, nature walks, pond dipping and picnics around the lakes. They were able to learn more about large scale food production and all the different produce the farm supplies. Both Farm and Groundwork staff were on hand to talk about modern day agriculture and the importance of educating all about where food comes from and how it gets to our homes.

Following on from these trips each of the schools will receive three tailored sessions delivered by an Education Officer from Groundwork West Midlands. Activities include;

  • Introduction to gardening tools and health and safety
  • Preparing an area, e.g. weeding and learning about what can be grown in that space
  • Sowing seeds in pots then transplanting outdoors
  • Learning about how plants grow, where food comes from and healthy eating
  • Identifying the minibeasts that are good or bad for our garden

Without the support of Sheepwash Farm and their partners it would not have been possible to fund the coach travel or sessions for the schools – we also have enough funding to pay the coach fees for another four schools so they can visit the farm next year.

A big thank you to our kind partners and donors!
